Story:

Squirrel energy I was sitting on a blanket in my yard working on this essence. I heard something rustling the dried plant material in the flower bed behind me. I turned around and saw that it was a squirrel. It was half hanging off of the fence trying to get at some seeds that were still attached to the plant. I turned back around and continued my concentration. As I did this, I was keenly aware that the squirrel was moving around to different places in my yard. (Sidenote: a long time ago, while in college, I had a squirrel run toward me while I was walking down the sidewalk. I thought maybe I was in the squirrel’s way. But as I swerved so did the squirrel. This experience has left me with a bit of untrust in this species over the years.)

Pretty soon, I could feel and hear it creeping up closer and closer to me in spontaneous curiosity. I paused. In this moment, I felt an innate desire to trust to see what would happen if I remained calm and observed. I turned around, and it was very close to me. That squirrel and I shared a moment. The squirrel’s deep coffee brown eyes looked curious. They actually looked friendly. I smiled. I admired this squirrel with its chestnut brown coat. It looked smooth. I imagined holding it and petting its soft fur. It was standing on its hind legs with it’s beautiful bushy tail swishing side to side, its forearms were resting on its abdomen, and it was looking at me intently. It looked really cute. I felt thankful that this mammal allowed me to observe it’s beauty. Squirrels really are a delightful work of nature. This one seemed strangely wise. A few seconds later, someone let my dog out. This changed everything. Luckily, squirrels are quick and decisive. It was gone. I was disappointed that this moment was gone with it. This is all we can do, enjoy each moment as it comes and pivot when we need to. A good lesson to learn from a squirrel.
